Air Force to Honor F-16 With Air Power Legacy Series in 2025

The Air Force football team will honor the Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon with the 2025 edition of the Air Power Legacy Series uniform. The Falcons will wear the special uniform for the Navy game scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4, at Noon ET at Navy Marine-Corps Memorial Stadium. The game will be nationally televised on CBS.
The helmet replicates a fighter pilot's helmet with the front bumper featuring a silhouette of the F-16. The front of the helmet replicates the visor cover with the F-16 Fighting Falcon patch and the word “Psycho,” which is the call sign of Col. William Andrews, an F-16 hero shot down in Operation Desert Storm. The back bumper features the word “Viper,” a common nickname for the aircraft.
The hip of the pants features the roundel symbol. “Viper” appears down one leg while the other leg features “Fighting Falcon”, the official name of the F-16. The jersey front has Air Force, along with the player's name and the patch of the corresponding squadron represented. The sleeve has the American flag and squadron patch of the base represented. The back of the jersey has the tail flash of the fighter squadron.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a compact, multi-role fighter aircraft. It is highly maneuverable and has proven itself in air-to-air combat and air-to-surface attack. It provides a relatively low-cost, high-performance weapon system for the United States and allied nations. The F-16 can locate targets in all weather conditions and detect low flying aircraft in radar ground clutter. In an air-to-surface role, the F-16 can fly more than 500 miles (860 kilometers), deliver its weapons with superior accuracy, defend itself against enemy aircraft, and return to its starting point. An all-weather capability allows it to accurately deliver ordnance during non-visual bombing conditions.

Special Tactics
(2024)
The uniform combination has a number of key elements highlighting areas of the AFSOC mission. The helmet features the official emblem of AFSOC. The back bumper of the helmet highlights AFSOC's motto, “Any Place, Any Time, Anywhere.” A sticker on the back of the helmet highlights the Air Force Special Tactics logo with a lightning bolt, green feet, and dagger, representing the “First there, that others may live” community. The front bumper of the helmet features the Special Tactics Combat Control motto “First There.” The jersey name plate on the right chest features each player's name. The right sleeve is adorned with an American flag, while the left showcases one of three different badges representative of Air Force Special Tactics. The red swoosh on the jersey and pants, along with the red outline in the numbers, are a tip of the cap to the scarlet beret worn by Special Tactics Combat Controllers. On the back of the jersey will be AFSOC in the traditional nameplate. The pants will feature a dagger, a symbol of special operations, on the left leg and the Special Tactics Combat Control motto “First There” on the right leg.
Doolittle Raiders
(2023)
The 2023 APLS uniforms honored the Doolittle Raiders, made up of 80 pilots and crew of 16 B-25B Mitchell bombers who launched the Doolittle Raid April 18, 1942. The chrome helmet features the B-25 on the front bumper while the back bumper has the nicknames of the planes.
The right of the helmet features an image of a B-25 while the left has the Raiders patch from the jersey. The jersey features letters and numbers of steel and rivets like on the B-25 aircraft the Raiders flew in the mission. The right chest lists tail numbers of the aircraft that flew the mission. The left sleeve features the squadron patch of the Raiders.
Space Force
(2022)
The 2022 edition honored the Space Force, which the U.S. Air Force Academy sends about 100 graduates to each year. The helmet featured the lightning bolt with a shared image between the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force, representing dominance, quick strike and precision. The jersey featured U.S. Space Force base patches on the left shoulder and a tonal United States flag on the right sleeve. The unit patches feature Space Base Delta 1 headquartered at Peterson Space Force Base and Space Base Delta 2 headquartered at Buckley Space Force Bases. The pants had a pair of blue vertical stripes with USSF down the middle in gray.
Linebacker II
(2021)
The Linebacker II uniforms honor the B-52 Stratofortress and the three-day, “maximum effort” Linebacker II mission against the North Vietnamese forces in December of 1972.
Red Tails
Uniform
(2020)
The Red Tails uniforms were created to honor the Tuskegee Airman, a group of all African American fighter pilots during WWII, who saw success escorting bombers into enemy territory and flew more than 15,000 sorties.
C-17 Uniform
(2019)
The C-17 aircraft is a large military transport. The uniform honored 9 Air Force bases on the back of the jersey: Charleston, Dover, Elmendorf, Hickam, Lewis-McChord, McGuire, March, Travis, & Wright-Patterson.
AC-130 Helmet
(2018)
The AC-130 uniforms honor the heavily armed, long-endurance, ground attack aircraft and represent the Spooky and Spectre variants of the aircraft.
F-35 Helmet
(2017)
The F-35 Lightning II Helmet, modeled after the one F-35 pilots wear in flight, is one of the Air Force's fifth-generation fighters, honoring the present and future of air power with decals representing one of the five Air Force F-35-A operational fighter squadrons in the Air Force.
Sharktooth Helmet
(2016)
The Sharktooth Helmet honors the WWII era fighter plane pilots, called “Flying Tigers,” who were part of the U.S. Army Air Corps, which later became the United State Air Force.
